Hannah Percival holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts: Music Theory from Texas Tech University (TTU). Her interdisciplinary research, informed by her M.A. in Counseling, uses music cognition to explore why humans use music to feel interconnected, as described in her dissertation, Can You Hear the Connection?: A Study on Musical-Social Bonding. This research has been presented at several research conferences, including the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, Society for Music Perception and Cognition, and the Texas Society for Music Theory. She has been an active member of the Performing Arts Research Lab (PeARL) at TTU since its inception and has served as co-author on several publications.
Dr. Percival has 14 years of music teaching experience, with six years in the collegiate setting. She currently teaches musicianship and music theory in her positions as Lecturer of Music Theory at Sam Houston State University and Part-Time Instructor of Music at Houston Community College. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Piano Pedagogy from TTU and owns a piano studio associated with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) that offers music theory and piano lessons to students ages 4-adult. Previously, she also taught classes for Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp and Lubbock Symphony Orchestra’s Education Department.
In addition to music education, she was a lead writing consultant for TTU’s Graduate Writing Center for four years. Her writing coaching style, like her teaching style, focuses on highlighting each client’s unique voice while guiding them through the parameters of the specific writing genre.
